MENTAL HEALTH REFERRAL SYSTEM FOR SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION - O.A.S.I.S

What is Oasis?

Opportunities for Accommodation and Support In Swansea.
Oasis is a partnership agreement between the City and County of Swansea mental health service, and registered social and private landlords. The project commenced in March 2006.

What will it do?

Oasis will act as a central referral point for care coordinators for mental health supported accommodation services which will include Supporting People services, private service providers, nursing and residential care. Referrals will no longer be sent directly to ‘providers’, instead they will be directed to the Oasis Coordinator who will be responsible for matching service users needs with specific provision.

What benefit will it be for providers and Service users?

One of the main benefits for providers and service users will be that the Oasis coordinator will have a detailed information and knowledge of the mental health provision, and will be able to maximise the use of the range of mental health and non mental health specific service provision available across Swansea. It is anticipated that this should reduce inappropriate placements and assist service users with maintaining their occupancy.

What benefit will it be for care coordinators?

One of the main benefits to care coordinators will be the ‘common referral form’ which will enable them to complete just one form as opposed to a plethora of documents issued by individual projects.

Will this mean reduced choice for all concerned?

No, the common referral form is a consultative tool used in association with Service users, which allows for preference of accommodation type, as well as indicating the level and intensity of support required. Service providers will still be required to undertake their own assessment process to determine whether they can provide the level of service requested. In other words, they can continue to provide justification for not accepting a referral where they feel that the referral is an inappropriate match.

How will it contribute to future planning of services?

It is the intention of the project to improve and increase the range of accommodation with support to people with mental ill health, and strategically identify levels of unmet need over provision of services.
