The Psychological Service Department – Swansea NHS Trust
Who we are
The Psychological Therapies team comprises a range of registered staff all of whom are trained and supervised in Psychological Therapies. We have psychodynamic therapists, Cognitive Behavioural therapists, psychologists and a psychiatrist who specialises in psychotherapy. At any given time we also have trainees from a range of disciplines and Graduates working with us.
Where we are
At present we have 2 bases. One at the Psychology Department at Cefn Coed Hospital and the other at Ty Morris Therapy Centre in Morriston. We are also able to see people at other sites such as the Orchard Centre and Tredillion House at times.
Who we see
We see a wide range of people all of whom have psychological difficulties or who are emotionally distressed and who need help to deal with life because of this. Generally this distress goes beyond the every-day troubles that we all experience at different times in our lives. We make an assessment of all the people who are referred to us to see if we are able to offer a therapy that will help the individual.
What we do
Because we are a multi-disciplinary team, we are able to offer a range of psychological therapies (mostly “talking” therapies) to suit the individual. Basically we offer an initial assessment and then we will decide with the person which individual therapy or group therapy will be most useful. Sometimes we might just be asked to provide a professional opinion or a stand–alone assessment to help other professionals with their care plans.
How to access us
In order to access our service we need a referral from a Primary Care Liaison Nurse who are based in GP practices or another Healthcare professional (such as a Psychiatrist, Social Worker or OT. At present due to resource constraints, we have a long waiting list, but we are currently looking at ways to support people while they wait (such as guided self help or psycho-education groups to help people understand and manage their emotionally distress better).
